Extreme Water Sports: Wakeboarding And Water Ski

By:

Water skiing and wakeboarding are water sports you can learn and try in a day. You must learn to balance yourself, and have a person to drive a tow boat while you ride behind it. There are lots of destinations that come with classes and practise, but you don't need to invest a long time on learning. Virtually all novices who have never tried either sport learn how to wake board or ski on water in one day.

Water Skiing

As the name indicates, you hop onto a pair of skis and steer across the water in them. The equipment needed is quite unlike the equipment you use to ski in snow. You will be grasping a cable attached to the tow boat and riding in the wake of the speeding boat.

There are instances where people prefer to ski using only half a pair. This is another technique that is best left for more advanced water ski professionals, or those that have undergone intensive training. Some water ski enthusiasts move on to win medals in competitions.

What is Wakeboarding?

Wakeboarding is a relatively new sport, compared to other water sports. It was accidentally discovered by several surfers who tried using modified surfboards instead of skis for water skiing. Wakeboarding quickly became mainstream with equipment designs made for the sport and its fans. The idea is to "surf" in the wake of a special tow boat.

In wakeboarding, a board that is slightly smaller than the smallest surfboard is used. The board used in wakeboarding resembles a skateboard without the upturned side. The board's bottom is rounded so that you can skim the surface of the water more effectively. Fins may also be attached under the board.

Safety Accessories

When wakeboarding or water skiing, you should wear shoulder and knee pads, as well as a helmet. The water may seem soft, but hitting the surface of the water at a high speed can cause bodily damage like hitting a cemented pavement. Equipment that can cover the arms and the legs are also needed.

Another person should be present in the boat. A spotter is an essential part of the team. This spotter will tell the boat driver when it's time to speed up or slow down. Even when the rider is a professional, there should be someone there looking out for him. The spotter will also be the one to tell the driver if there are problems, so that the boat can slow down and the rider can be fished out of the water.
