Extreme Fun Mud Running Anyone?

By:

Mud running along a sometimes-dangerous course is not a sport for everyone. Only athletes in top condition who are not afraid of overcoming obstacles need apply. Anyone else is welcome to attend as a spectator.

Not the ordinary type of race found on city streets or in rural settings, these events are held in some of the toughest areas to navigate due to conditions and natural obstacles. They fully challenge runners who have to be very physically fit in order to survive what some might call a trial by fire. And fire is sometimes one of the obstacles included in these races. Other types might include climbing walls, barbed wire or huge cargo nets. Each race is held in a different part of the country and chosen for its natural features that make the run more challenging and fun. A mud run in 2011 includes terrain that has a water obstacle and at least 14 different obstacles in total.

Each event has 12 to 15 different obstacles that will surprise and challenge participants. Many include water obstacles that include swimming. Should a runner not be able to swim or not be confident in their swimming ability, event officials will provide another type of activity. In any case that the participant does not feel confident about overcoming the obstacle or thinks it is unsafe, an alternate activity can be provided.

This type of 5K mud run is unique and unlike other types of events. Runners are encouraged to wear costumes and the wackier the better. A contest allows an award for the best costume.

Runners compete in their age division. Age groups start at 14 and end at 70 with about a four-year age range in each division. Competitors can be older than 70 if they are up to the physical challenges of the course. Runners can form teams of any size if they want to or run solo. The race is conducted in waves that start every 30 minutes. The organizers will place runners in the wave time requested whenever possible but sometimes times are changed.

Those not competing can participate as spectators. There is no entry fee to be a spectator. They can cheer on their favorite runners and partake in great food and music after the race. The party atmosphere makes this truly a day to remember.

Anyone looking for a fitness challenge should check out these great events. Mud running is not for everyone so only the most fit should compete.
