By:

The Caribbean is a region rich in history, which is one of the things that makes Caribbean honeymoons so fascinating. If you find out more about the history of the region when you are there, youll find so many things youll want to visit that it may seem overwhelming. However, if you want to experience three of the most important themes in the history of the Caribbean its discovery, the slave trade, and rum then here are a few things you should try to visit to experience the wider picture.

Discovery

The Caribbean is famous as the place where Columbus discovered the Americas in 1492, and one of the most popular activities on Caribbean honeymoons is visiting the place where he is supposed to have landed. Although Columbuss landing site is officially located in The Bahamas on the island of San Salvador, this fact remains disputed. Some reports claim that Samana Cay, a more isolated island, is the more likely landing spot. However, it doesnt really matter where the exact spot is, and perhaps well never know. Whichever site you choose to visit, try to sit back and reflect on this defining moment in the history of the world, surrounded by the same scenery as Columbus must have seen for himself when he first stepped foot onto land all those centuries ago.

Slavery

Unfortunately, slavery played a prevalent role in the history of the Caribbean, and it is one of the themes that keeps on coming up during your explorations on Caribbean honeymoons. The best way to find out more about this sad history is by visiting one of the many plantations across the Caribbean where the slaves were forced to work. These are found on most islands in the Caribbean. You could head to the Lower Estate Sugar Works on the British Virgin Islands, Roaring River Estate in Jamaica, or one of the many plantations on St Lucia. Wherever you visit, you will be able to experience this sad chapter in human history for yourself and perhaps gain an understanding of how it must have been for the slaves.

Rum

Rum plays a major role in the Caribbeans heritage, and as you might expect there are a number of places you can find out more about this famous drink when on Caribbean honeymoons. The best way to experience rum, other than drinking it, is to visit one of the numerous distilleries located on the islands. For a start, theres the Callwood Rum Distillery in the British Virgin Islands, the Mount Gay Rum Tour in Barbados, the Cruzan Rum Distillery in St Croix, and the Havana Club Museum in Havana. On Bay Street in Nassau, is the worlds only Bacardi Store, and there are many more other opportunities to sample this famous drink, so make sure you check one out to discover more about its history.
