Explore The Northern Territory Through The Savannah Way

By:

Our recommendation is the Savannah Way - that is the best manner in which you can explore the diverse attractions of the Northern Territory.

This driving route, stretching over 3000kms, is Highway 1 and it is the hot water springs, majestic and intricate rock formations, gorges and abundant wildlife that make this region truly unique in Australia.
The ideal time to travel through this area is during the period from April to September. The first stop would be the Queensland Gulf region with its Innot Hot Springs. Discover the lost city in Cape Crawford before going ahead to visit the Mataranka Nature Reserve where you will find more thermal springs.

Huge National Parks like the Nitmiluk, Gregory and Keep River National Park sprawling over many thousands of square kilometres beckon you with their rich variety of flora and fauna. Your long drive can then culminate in Broome, which lies in the Kimberley Region - and you will surely welcome the warm comfort of Cable Beach after a really long drive from Cairns.

Just a word of caution is in order here. Since some of the routes could be closed during the summer, it is better to plan your trip well so that you know where you are able to drive and how to avoid routes that can flood quickly.

You can now proceed to Borroloola for some fishing and a visit to the museum. There are boats you can hire at King Ash Bay for fishing as well as for exploring the cute Sir Edward Pellew Islands.

The next part of the drive is to Roper Bar. On the way you must stop by at the Caranbirini Nature Reserve where you can learn a lot about Aboriginal culture and also about the efforts being undertaken to protect endangered species in this area.

Mataranka Nature Reserve, with its thermal springs, will help you rejuvenate prior to starting the next phase of your journey. You have the option of then going west to either Nitmiluk Park and indulge in some water sports or to the east towards Daly Waters and from there to Gregory National Park. The latter park combines both tropical as well as desert areas and is worth a visit mainly to look at some wonderful karst landscapes. It covers an area of 13,000 square kilometres. There is another route you may try through Timber Creek if you are in the mood for some fishing.

From here you can continue to Kununurra where the serene Lake Argyle as well as the Sandstone Beehive Huts with its World Heritage status is sure to impress you. The Keep River National Park is yet another place that is worth visiting before you ultimately reach Cable Beach and would have in the process crossed from the Northern area into the Western part of Australia.
