Raja Ampats is a world famous Archipelago which is located at the northern tip of the New Guinea Peninsula in Indonesia. This is specifically located in the West Papua province. The Raja Ampats of Four kings compromise of about one thousand five hundred small islands, shoals and cays that surround the four main islands of Waigeo, Batanta, Salawati, Kofiau and Misool.

It total is comprises of about forty thousand square kilometers of Land as well as sea. The larges marine national park in Indonesia, the Cenderawasih Bay is also part of this amazing archipelago. This place is now renamed as West Papua province of Indonesia. This used to be Irian Jaya. These islands also form the northern most pieces of the continent of Australia.

A lot of marine surveys have been conducted and it has been suggested that the kind of marine life diversity that has been found here in the Raja Ampats area is some of the highest recorded on earth. The diversity here is considered to be much greater than most other areas that have been part of the famous Coral Triangle. The coral triangle particularly consists of Indonesia, Philippines and Papua New Guinea.

The world coral reef bio diversity has the coral triangle right in the middle of it, this is probably how the Raja Ampats islands become one of the richest coral reef systems in the whole world.

There are huge colonies here with massive corals and the sea temperatures here is relatively higher than other area. This could work out really well , as the higher temperature would make the coral reef system largely less susceptible to threats like coral bleaching, diseases and other factors that compromise the existence and growth of Coral reef systems in the world.The whole area of Raja Ampats is mostly left untouched and untainted by humans.

The marine diversity in the Raja Ampats region is quite strongly influenced by its position which lies in between the Indian and the pacific oceans. These oceans have coral and fish larvae and these are quiet easily shared between both the oceans.

The Coral life and its diversity in the Raja Ampats is quite resilient and is one of the major sources of information and learning for marine experts to learn how to help protect other coral reef systems in the world.
