Experiencing The Benefits Of Lawn Care

By:

People have different approaches to various household tasks. There are those who actually enjoy an hour or two of spring cleaning , while others will find any excuse for not tackling the ironing or giving the family cars a wash and wax. You'll get similar responses when it comes to gardening jobs too. Weeding and pruning may be the last thing some would look forward to, while getting out the mower for a bit of lawn care is something many people find very relaxing.

It's odd that the simple task of creating some attractive stripes on a lush green area of grass can bring so much pleasure, but mowing the lawn is something many people find strangely therapeutic and pleasurable. There are many different jobs linked with lawn care activities, some are infrequent and involve a modicum of hard effort, such as scarifying or spiking, while others merely involve spreading some fertilizer or cutting the edges. Cutting a lawn is of course a more regular activity, especially during the summer months, however plenty of people relish the prospect of it.

There are also very few gardening jobs that can create such an immediate improvement so quickly. What looks just like any other patch of well-used unloved lawn suddenly undergoes an amazing change. Shorter, more even blades of grass instantly look very tidy, a roller accurately leans the blades in darker and lighter strips, in one direction along one line and then in the opposite direction on the following one. And when the grass clippings are collected at the same time, the end result can be a colourful, almost shining lawn area, something the very few people could fail to adore.

So what does it take to create such a beautiful looking lawn? Well of course some planning and a little experience, or at least some good advice, is all that you need. Lawn care doesn't suddenly begin once the grass starts growing again and bring instantaneous results. As any enthusiastic gardener or commercial green keeper will tell you, a great looking lawn requires attention on a regular basis and in fact the summer months are perhaps the easiest, with only mowing to worry about.

The key to a great looking lawn is to start work early, almost as soon as the previous yearly cycle has started to come to an end, when lawn growth is starting to slow down and the autumn leaf fall is just starting. It is at this time that planning starts with a careful look at the state of your lawn and making plans to give it the attention it requires. That will almost certainly involve collecting up fallen leaves and twigs on a regular basis, slowly raising your mowing height as the growth rate reduces and then aerating your lawn to free up air flow. You will also have to decide whether you have any issues with weeds or moss and also setting your lawn up with some nutrition before winter sets in. Dressing the lawn with a special autumn sand and loam mix is something most professional groundsmen will apply to cricket squares, lawn tennis courts or bowling greens and is something most domestic lawns rarely benefit from but can make huge differences.

Then it's time to leave the lawn to itself during the coldest months of winter and wait until the spring weather returns, daytime temperatures rise, hours of daylight increase and lawns start a whole new growing cycle.

Again this can be a busy time for those concerned with lawn care, repeating some of the jobs that were done back in autumn, but the rewards are only just around the corner. With that short list of lawn care tasks taken care of, spring will soon be in full swing and you'll be able to look forward to lots of enjoyable and satisfying hours mowing your beautiful lawn and enjoying the long, relaxing days of summer.
