Experiencing High Definition In Your Home Theater

By:

When it comes to televisions, camcorders, and even video gaming, there seems to be one thing that everyone will agree you need to have: high definition. High definition has become the new standard and could very well take over digital television transmission in a matter of years. Watching movies is fun and entertaining, but it is even more so when you are watching your favorite actor in a new blockbuster action hit in stunning picture clarity. Playing video games is lots of fun, but having graphics that are crystal clear and colors so vivid that you want to lick the screen makes it even more enjoyable.

To experience high definition at home, you will need quite a few things, so it is important that you save up a medium-sized chunk of change. Or you can rack up the purchases on your credit card, but I would highly advise against that unless you are really good at handling your credit card transactions and pay off balances immediately. In the long run, a $1500 television could very well cost you three times the amount in interest charges if you are not smart with your credit card.

First thing's first: movies. You will, of course, need a high definition television. A television qualifies as high definition when it has a 720 resolution or higher. If your TV has a 480 resolution, then it is definitely time to upgrade. 720p resolution means that there the television has 720 vertical pixels and 1280 horizontal pixels. It provides good-enough picture clarity, but the best of the best at the moment is 1080p resolution, which features 1080 vertical pixels, 1920 horizontal pixels, and progressive scanning.

Having a HDTV by itself, however, won't give you the best picture quality. You need a device that will play the movies in high definition. The HD DVD has been discontinued and is practically obsolete, so your only choice is a Blu-Ray player. Note that regular DVDs cannot be played on this player; only DVDs marked as Blu-Ray can be played on this player. When watching TV programming, your cable or satellite provider will make available channels that broadcast in high definition. If you are using an antenna, local HD channels are available at no additional charge.

When it comes to video games, make sure that you use an HDMI cable that is connected from the back of your PlayStation 3 or XBOX 360 console. The Nintendo Wii, at this time, does not have an HDMI cable port, so you might want to invest in a composite cable, which offers a little better picture quality than the standard cables that it comes with. Many video games now feature full length, cinematic videos, and watching those in high definition is a real treat and a thousand steps up from the 8-bit generation.
