The Flinders Rangers is definitely home to some very wonderful landscape and should be your first stop as you head out of Adelaide. This 3 hour drive covering about 250 kilometres is certainly worth it when you consider that you get to see ranges that have been around for more than 800 million years and comprise of the finest quartzite along with limestone. Southern Flinders features a huge pound stretching 17kms in length and about 7kilometers in width and is called the Wilpena Pound. If you are a trekking enthusiast, you can set base here and take a look at the highest point in these ranges through the St Marys peak trail.

Your family on the other hand will certainly love the superb 360 degree views that the steep slopes and rugged peaks present in the northern part of Flinders. The Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary has adequate camping and motoring facilities to let you enjoy the abundant wildlife. You can also take advantage of the walking trails if you like.

Other attractions include a steam train journey through deep rocks and embankments of stone. The Pichi Richi Railway that still uses the original Ghan locomotive would be an absolute treat for your kids. There is a camel tour as well. Then you have the Arkaroola observatory tower from where you can get a fantastic astronomic experience.

The Flinders Ranges has many smaller areas within it that have been given the status of National Parks. If you are keen on long walks or cycling then the Heysen Trail along with the Mawson Trail that run for many hundred kilometres are the best bets. Many people also take to horse riding on these trails and are therefore able to cover a large distance quickly.

There is also a cultural centre about 50kms from Copley. Here they organise guided tours to the various rock art places. Overnight camping arrangements are also provided and you can expose your family to the unique experience of a campout amidst natural surroundings. The best time to visit these ranges is between April and October. You only need to set aside enough time so that you can cover everything that this special place has to offer.
