Also known as the Bonfire night, The Guy Fawkes Night is a deeply rooted tradition in the United Kingdom. History tells us the story of how Guy Fawkes, who on the 5th of November 1605, along with a set of Catholic schemers were caught in the act of attempting to destroy the parliament with ammunition in the form of gun powder when King James I, a Protestant, was residing in it. The event also has roots in the Celtic harvest festival of Samhain which is usually held at the end of the English harvest period. Thus from this historical event, a new tradition of sorts was formed, where groups of people gathered over bonfires which were held to commemorate it through the years.
Fireworks when introduced became an integral part of this as it has a close resemblance to the effects of gunpowder. Other additions such as burning an effigy of Guy Fawkes and groups of children going around asking for money to buy fireworks in a similar fashion to trick-or-treating are however slowly dying out.
Disneyland Paris has become part of this global celebration of Guy Fawkes by commemorating the event with a Guy Fawkes themed night that includes bonfires and a fireworks display. Usually a large construction at the centre of the Disney Lake is set on fire by Mickey and Minnie Mouse during the festivities and this resembles a floating bonfire. Other aspects of interest for revellers include laser shows, coupled with rockets and firecrackers and even live music to chill out to, all of which are organized by Disneyland Paris in line with the events theme of a fun and an enjoyable evening out. Imagine chilling out with friends or family amidst a large bonfire, nodding your head to lively music and relishing the sight of vibrant fireworks lighting up the night sky.
