Expeditioning Gear

Expeditioning Gear

Adventurists and outdoorsmen alike are always looking out for new equipment that they can get their hands on. No wonder; their hobby is so perilous that they need to use any piece of equipment that they can to reduce their risks of getting in trouble outdoors and to make their lives a somewhat easier. We know logging is the second most perilous profession in the United States. You might be asking what is the first? Why, it's fishing. Outdoorsmen are often fishermen and loggers too, in one way or another. Now you might be wondering, "Well I am an outdoorsman too and I don't cut trees down or fish." Perhaps I should have elaborated on my definition of adventurist, outdoorsman, or expeditioner that I oftentimes refer to. To me, these 3 names describe those who not only enjoy hiking a mile long trail within a metro city, but those who either drive, boat, or fly for hours out to the most wild places that they can come up with to find themselves completely immersed into nature. My point is that a real outdoorsman, adventurist, or expeditioner who goes to very wild areas will really need to be able to catch fish on occasion and cut trees down in order to supply firewood. With that in mind, consider just how hazardous our hobby is. We are doing things that are statistically considered to be the most dangerous jobs in the US. On top of all this, we are in the middle of nowhere and can rely only on ourselves and our tools.
Being an adventurist myself, one of my goals when searching for a place to explore is the amount of people, or traffic, that the place gets. I don't enjoy heavily used trails or popular tourism destinations. If I can go to a place where very few people visit yearly, that's where I am going to go.
The previous was mostly my definition of an outdoorsman. The term "adventurist" builds upon the definition of an outdoorsman, adding a more physical or hands-on aspect to it. An outdoorsman may simply like to go to the outdoors to enjoy it. An adventurist would seek out some activities or thrills within the wilderness. It is a way of describing one who has a more defined goal or interest in "the great outdoors". Another word that I am always using to describe people like myself is "expeditioner". I believe that expeditioners are not just outdoorsmen who enjoy nature and solitude; they are not only adventurists who go to the woods for a certain something; they are also campers and travelers, who may spend days, weeks, months or even years out in the outdoors. One of the more famous expeditioners known on the internet is a Finnish man by the name of Lars Monsen. He is known for having gone on ten expeditions, spanning a total of over 6 years. One of his longest feats was traversing northern Canada over an almost three year period. You better believe that the gear he was hauling throughout his trip was worth 1000's of dollars. Maybe if he didn't have the quality gear, he would not even have survived.
In fact, I shouldn't have said that he was hauling his gear; he was carrying it. The reason why I make this correction is because quality ex[edition gear is usually very light, which leads me to my next point. A very considerable aspect to consider when choosing gear for one's trekking needs is weight. Yes, it's nice to have a machete with you as well as numerous knives and an axe. But, do you really need that machete in a northern boreal forest? Cooking in cast-iron pots is romantic, but perhaps you want to sacrifice that for a titanium pot that weighs 10 pounds lighter. Weight is a very key aspect to consider, and there is a rapidly growing market for light or "lite" woods equipment for an extremely reason.
