Expedition To The Tower Of London

William the conqueror initiated the construction of Tower Of London in 1070.The fortress located at the Thames, now replaced as THE WHITE TOWER, was like a temporary wooden building originally. Over the time new complex structures were introduced and finally formation of about 20 towers took place. The tower is mostly known for its Crown Jewels. The tower acted as a royal residence for many kings providing them more security than the other palaces.

WHITE TOWER

It is one of the oldest parts which were completed in 1097 holding length of 27.4 meters and width of 4.6 meters. People call it WHITE TOWER because of the whitewashing done to it under the reign of Henry III, the building has four domed turrets(small towers) at each corner from which one is round shaped due to presence of spiral staircase and others are square shaped. And the round shaped was long used as observatory.

OTHER TOWERS

Henry III expanded the tower in 13th century with construction of two defensive walls round the tower. Thirteen towers held at the inner wall and six at the outer. The towers were mainly used as prison to many political opponents. Many famous identities were imprisoned, for example the sons of King Edward IV and then the children were locked in bloody tower by their uncle king Richards III. The two children were never ever seen again after imprisonment and most probably killed by guards.

YEOMAN WARDERS

We can find them at the main entrance of the tower which is at the Byword tower. They were not only represented as the guard but also the guides of fortress. Ravens have been living for centuries because of the raven master that are one of the about 40 Yeoman Warders. It is said that the tower along eighth kingdom will fall if ravens leave.

CROWN JEWELS

As we have discussed that collection of Crown jewels since 17th century, during reign of Charles II, in Tower Of London has been most famous tourist attraction spot. In around 1660 monarchy was re setup along with the creation of most of these jewels and majority of it were destroyed by Cromwell. These jewels can be found in jewel house, north of white tower, part of Waterloo barracks. Some of the famous jewels to be kept in the towers are 530 carat first star of Africa, imperial state crown having more than 28000 diamonds and the most famous Kohinoor diamond.

MORE SIGHTS

There are many more to see in Tower Of London such as the personal armory of king Henry VIII called the royal armories which is one of the worlds greatest. The medieval palace in the Tower of London is also open to visitors and also there are act of enacting of historic events in the fortress
