Today, the service sector has become the most dominant in the citys economy, and it is especially prominent in the UKs banking sector, which employs nearly a quarter of the total workforce of just over 400,000. The Bank of Englands only regional office outside London is located in the city. In 2006, the city region was sustaining an economy worth about 46billion.

Leeds is a major retail centre, with complexes such as the Merrion Centre, Headrow Centre and Victoria Quarter bringing many visitors into the city. Meanwhile, many surrounding towns, including Morley, Castleford, Pontefract, Keighley, Ilkley and Skipton have increasingly become satellites of Leeds, as more and more people commute to work in their nearest large city. Leeds is close to the northern end of the M1 motorway, and the point where it crosses the M62 cross-Pennine route linking Liverpool and Hull. As a result, it has good road connections in every direction.

Leeds Bradford International Airport, about 10 miles north-west of the city centre, has experienced substantial growth in recent years, and is a feeder airport into important world air transport hubs such as London, Amsterdam and Paris.
