Using an Artists Color Wheel for your Benefit

Interior design, for your own personal home, or for your dollhouse kit can be a matter of color choices. Everyone that has gone to high school art or taken any basic art school knows a little bit about the color wheel. This wheel was designed to fit all colors into a solid circle to express similarities and differences. Opposing colors are the most different and offer attractiveness to the eye called contrast, colors touching each other are the most similar and can be accent colors that heighten, but dont distract from the feel. When starting your designing pick up a color wheel for your color selections, a little knowledge about color coordination will go a long way to help your design and flow capabilities.

Designing by Mood

The mood of the room should be a designers motivation and no other, it is the mood that dictates color and furniture, and not the other way around. A mood is the purpose of the room, the reason that it exists. A great example is a play room where the sole purpose of the room is to have fun and enjoy oneself. One more example would be the bedroom, the most personal quarters, and is designed for only one person. Those dollhouses that are awe inspiring tap into the settings and mood of each room to design it. Visualize what mood you would like to portray in your rooms, for what purposes would they have that room and what particular mood would they set. When you tap into the mood you will know it, and the design of the room will just fall in place as if it was meant to be there all along.

Designing the Outside of Your Dollhouse Kit

The outside of the dollhouse has as much do to with the appeal, if not more, than the inside design. The first thing that everybody looks at is the paint and the shingles. When you are setting up your dollhouse apply a good three coats of good craft paint to your dollhouse. The shingles should be died and applied carefully using a ruler to assure that the lines are straight. In addition to the paint and shingles a couple of accessories like a barbeque or bird house will add to the attractiveness. There are even tiny additions like shutters and flower pots that you can add. Last but not least is the lighting of the exterior. Put some porch lights on, and if you have lit the inside it will make the glow through the windows appealing on the outside as well.

Using Size to your Benefit for Design

When setting up your dollhouse and buying furniture you will need to remember the three sizing constraints. Here are the sizing elements, there are three: Miniature scales, size of room dimensions, and comparative size. First is the scale of furniture, make sure that your furniture is the right scale for your dollhouse. Meaning, look up the miniature size of your dollhouse kit, if it is one inch scale then you need to buy one inch furniture The second size element, sizing up the room, means that you are not getting furniture that will not fit in the room. Make sure that you measure your furniture room and are aware of the dimensions of the furniture that you buy. Lastly, the final point is the size of the furniture as it compares to other pieces around it. Larger pieces will have more of a prominence so if you really want to make your china cabinet pop you shouldnt make the dining room table so elaborate.
