Excavators The Machines

Excavators The Machines

By:

Excavating devices and machinery are big vehicles with articulated arms, buckets and cabs mounted on a rotating platform on top of undercarriages with wheels or tracks. They are used in different kinds of jobs, such as for digging of holes, setting foundations, handling material, demolition, mining, landscaping, lifting and placing of heavy things such as pipes, and also river dredging.

There are different sizes available to suit different needs. The smallest ones are known as compact excavator or mini-excavator. The largest excavator made has a weight of approximately 85 tonnes. In the modern age, excavators have evolved in its hydraulic excavator capabilities. This has enabled excavators to be applied in other applications apart from excavation with the introduction of breaker, auger and grapple.

In a jobsite, excavating tools and machines are usually used alongside with bulldozers and loaders. A lot of the excavating tools and machines available consist of quick-attach mounting systems to allow simplified attachment mounting which can increase the machine's utilization. In smaller and compact versions of excavating tools and machines, they usually come with a small backfill blade. This is attached to the undercarriage which is used for pushing materials such as the earth back into a hole.

In the past, before the 1990s, excavating tools and machines have a conventional counterweight that hung over the rear of the machine to increase the lifting capacity and digging force. However, this is a major disadvantage as the machine could not turn all the way to complete a cycle as is limited in its turn radius. This is extremely frustrating in tight turn areas.

Komatsu, an engineering company which manufactures such machines and vehicles developed new excavators with tight tail swing excavators. This is widely used today. Excavators are also known as diggers. Tracked excavators are also known as trackhoes, they are different from backhoes due to the action of the buckets which are being pulled back towards the machine. Sometimes, excavators are also known as fronthoes as they operate the opposite way compared to backhoes.

There are different types of excavators; compact, dragline, steam, power and long reach excavators. The major manufacturers of excavators are Bobcat, Hitachi, JCB, Komatsu, Liebherr, Mitsubishi and Caterpillar just to name a few. In the UK, wheeled excavators are also known as 'rubber ducks' and in Japan, excavators are known as Yumbo.

Before deciding to buy an excavator, there are a few considerations that must be thought of, such as the size of the project, short-term or long-term usage, costs and the ideal specifications in mind. Then, check out different excavating devices and machinery from different manufacturers and compare the specifications and prices. In some places, they allow you to try before buying.

It is not easy to operate such heavy and big vehicle. It takes time and practice to be able to operate an excavator. There are lots of safety precautions while operating such vehicles. An experienced operator will find that they will be able to perform different jobs without difficulties and they will be creative with how to use the excavating tools and machines for other tasks they are normally being used on.
