Evolution Of Barcodes: 2d Barcodes

By:

Bar codes are not merely an art work or strips of lines glued on or printed on to products we see in supermarkets. They are useful in a lot of ways for manufacturer's even consumers. For manufacturers these bar codes serve as monitoring tool while for consumers they come as identification cards, reward system and the like.

Now bar codes are even more developed in the form of two-dimensional bar codes. This kind of code is a higher type of bar codes having the capacity to store a great deal of data. It basically grew in storage and has become more information stored compared to that of its old counterpart. The old ones or the so called linear bar codes are merely identification mark which has enough data stored that can be readable through the scanners. The linear type is useful in itself however it has limitations which downgraded its purpose thus the two-dimensional bar code was born or the new and improved 2D bar codes.

2D barcodes don't merely act as identification but rather a portable database. It can store substantial information which can be extracted with the aide of a scanner. The 2D barcode has multiple imprints which represents information which the linear barcode could not hold in it. There are two kinds of 2D barcodes: the stacked and the matrix.

The most popular kind of 2D barcode symbologies includes PDF 417 or Portable Data File. As the title suggests, this kind of barcode do not require another storage as it can store data in itself. These kinds of symbologies are prevalent in barcodes used in logistics, healthcare, manufacturing and the like.

Data Matrix is also a kind of barcode that can store up to 2000 characters. This kind of code is widely used in surgical plates, circuit boards and others. Another type of matrix barcode is the Maxi Code, it can hold 93 characters, and it may be less compared to that of Data Matrix however some institutions prefer this due to its capability to be scanned fast in a quick and precise manner.

So how does it work? 2D barcode is not space constraint as codes can be imprinted horizontally or vertically, with no limitations as to the number of information that is deemed vital for a specific product. Another good thing about 2d barcode is that data can be encoded faster as the symbols were developed and has evolved to create a smooth processing. The codes in 2D are also built together with a special scanner to beam into the information.

2D barcodes are great not just in the storing of information but also it has protective features which stays durable keeps the information stored as safe from being corrupted or tarnished. 2D barcodes need to have this special feature as these codes are important so important that they can be seen in some of the government issued forms or identifications like tax forms, licenses and the like.

To wrap everything up, 2D barcode is just the new generation of barcodes and is important as it can be a database of information in itself.
