Evolution Impacts Everything, Even Translation Services

Let us agree that language evolves. It is a fluid, dynamic organism that develops over time, adapting with our need to express anew and remaining stalwart when the language available is sufficient. The speed of language evolution is not constant; rare but widespread events might inspire dozens of new phrases or themes at once. Minor or local happenings will affect regional variations more frequently but also more slightly. Some believe that language is and always will be an approximation. Even the simplest idea cannot be expressed exactly the way it lives in the mind of the thinker. According to this perspective, the human mind develops faster than our means of expression and language will evolve to fill in the gaps and patch the cracks.

We can also consider language as a facilitator of human thought, a catalyst to our growing power to reason and develop into even more complex beings. After all, without language, would we be able to reason and interpret at all? Perhaps language develops to permit us to continue to evolve the way we think and what we think about. When an individual learns new words for color, they are able to better distinguish differences between colors. Neither ahead nor behind the development of human thought, this theory proposes that language rides alongside, begetting a symbiotic relationship between humans and their language.

Effectively translating an idea into language is something we learn to do as children and practice every day of our waking lives. Hopefully by the time we are grown, we are able to translate multi-dimensional ideas into a language that is effectively understood by others. We acquire new syntax, slang, allegory, cultural reference and tone to help us describe advanced thoughts.

When dealing with two or more languages, the process is more challenging, not only because of the linguistic differences, but because cultural differences can change the context of the idea. Anyone providing competent translation services should effectively connect the original idea to the target audience. A translation should read as a complex, multi-faceted idea born from the target language.

The language translation industry must also keep up with the times. As language patterns change, our understanding of language must also change to maintain direct access to the original idea. Translators must actively maintain their localized knowledge and stay up-to-date with changes in their fields of expertise. They must stay informed about local and global issues that inform the changes in an industry or how we speak and are understood. For instance, the medical field is bombarded with new information every single day, and the same can be said for terminology in general.
