Everything You Need To Know About Cutting Trees For Firewood

By:

If you have been to a Home Depot lately you know: firewood can be expensive! If you want to save money by doing it yourself, make sure you learn all the ins and outs of cutting trees.

The first thing you will need to do to cut a tree for firewood this winter is find a location and suitable tree. Fortunately there are a number of places where people without trees on their land can cut trees for firewood.

The cheapest alternative is usually to find a landowner such as a friend, relative, or coworker who will let you go onto their land and cut trees. If you know somebody who owns a lot of wooded land they may let you cut trees.

Many landowners are willing to let people cut trees on their property to clear brush or get rid of dead trees. In many cases a landowner will let you come and take trees off their land to save money.

A good way to find a person willing to let you cut trees is to ask around. Ask at your workplace, place of worship, and just around the community. In many cases there will be somebody who needs some trees cleared. Another good way to find a person is put a notice on a community bulletin board or internet site such as Craigslist.

If you see construction going on in a wooded area you might also talk to the contractor doing the work or the owner of the land. Construction and exaction work often brings down trees that need to be cleared.

Cutting Trees on Government Land
If you cannot find a landowner willing to let you cut trees, you may be able to cut them on government land. If there is a National Forest in your area, the National Forest Service does let private individuals cut trees in specific areas of the National Forest. You will have to contact the National Forest Service to get a permit and learn where you can cut wood.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), a federal agency that controls empty, unclaimed land in the West, also lets private individuals cut wood on its land. To cut trees on BLM land you will have to contact the BLM to get a permit.

There are also state forests and parks where private individuals can cut trees for firewood. A person will have to contact the state agency that oversees these lands to see how to get permission to cut wood there.

When Not to Cut Trees Yourself
Unfortunately, tree cutting can be a very dangerous activity if it's not done right. To begin, never cut down a tree that is next to a power line; the tree can fall on the power line, causing a very real danger of fire and electrocution. There is also a very good possibility that you will have to pay for any damage you to do the power line. Your neighbors will not be very happy with if you cause a power outage.

Trees and Houses
Another time not to cut down a tree is a big tree close to your house or the house of a neighbor. If the tree falls on a house it could do tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage to the house. If the tree falls on the property of your next door neighbor, you will be responsible for any damage you do.

Trees and Roads
Finally, never cut down a tree yourself if there is a possibility that it could fall on a public road or street, a public highway or railroad tracks. You do not want to do this because if the tree falls on a vehicle or causes an accident you will be responsible for any damage it causes.

In sum, cutting trees to make firewood in the winter can save you a lot of money, but it needs to be done right. If you can find the right place to cut a tree, and make sure you follow all safety procedures, you may find not only that you can save money this winter, but cutting a tree might actually be an activity you quite enjoy!
