Everything To Know About Furnaces

By:

Are you a resident of an older house with an aging furnace that could really use an overhaul? A new furnace sounds like a wonderful idea to you, especially if it is freezing outside and the system can no longer keep heat coming through the ducts like it used to. Well, where should you start? How do you know what alternatives there are from the current system of heat you have in your house? Are there any alternatives to begin with? A HVAC person will be able to explain all of the different kinds of furnaces on the market that will work in your current home.

The first type of furnace that a salesperson or contractor will talk about might be a geothermal heating and cooling unit. These units are great to have because they keep your house at a consistent temperature all year. Do you want the house to be 70 degrees no matter what month you are in? Simply set the thermostat and don't worry about it for months unless you want to change your temperature. The system works outside in the ground, where it uses the coolness of the ground to keep the pipes cold and insulated in the summer months. During the winter, the ground also works as an insulator to keep pipes that have been warmed up continuously warm. Geothermal systems are a larger expense up front, but they do have lower fuel costs throughout the year.

Another system available to households is a solar heating and cooling system. Since the sun is almost always shining, why not use the rays to your advantage and have them power the furnace and the AC system? When the solar panels trap the rays, it converts their energy into energy that can propel either the heating or the cooling device, depending on what month of the year it is. Solar systems are an expense up front, but really limit how much electricity is used during the year in order to power it. They keep your bills from being too expensive.

The furnace salesperson will also be able to tell you if there are ductless air conditioning units or energy efficient boilers that would work best for your home or business. Businesses require heating and cooling too, so if you own a small business and need to upgrade a system, you also have options when it comes to shopping around. The same person who has information on residential offerings can also help with commercial systems. The only difference might be in the size of the system that is required to heat or cool a building since businesses are usually bigger.

When you are contemplating an upgrade, make sure to have every system explained to you. Don't assume that you have to stick with the type of furnace already in your own home, whether it is a gas forced system or a propane fueled heat source. The options are open to anyone and everyone who can listen to them, or anyone who is interested in changing things up in order to be energy efficient.
