Everyone Loves Guitar Effects

By:

Even though guitarists all over the world will argue about the best sounds and style of play, there will not be much argument about the importance of guitar effects in creating a great sound. Even bands that have a completely different sound can sometimes use the same style of pedal to create their music so it is important to know which pedal or effects box can add something to your sound. You may not think there is too much similarity between the music of Metallica and Oasis, but both acts have used the same sort of overdrive effects pedal to add some serious crunch and fuzz to their live appearances.

Guitar effects really came to the fore in the 1960s and Jimi Hendrix was one of the main influences in exploring new sounds. Jimi managed to get sounds from the guitar that most people felt were impossible and he definitely transformed the musical landscape. It says a lot for the talent and energy of Hendrix that he managed to create a bigger legacy in a few short years than some artists could make in a number of decades.

Another artist who created a massive legacy in a very short space of time was Kurt Cobain. The Nirvana frontman was obviously a troubled individual but in three albums, the band changed the musical scene forever and the group are still cited as a massive influence today. Cobain was a lover of guitar effects and he would spend hours pouring over the devices and tinkering away to find a perfect sound. Cobain would use a lot of chorus effect on his guitars and this definitely had an impact on what people would regard the Nirvana and the grunge sound. With September 2011 being the 20th anniversary of the release of "Nevermind" by Nirvana, the music of Cobain is likely to be played regularly once again.

You would not say that there are too many musical similarities between U2 and Nirvana, but you would have to say that both groups loved their guitar effects. The Edge is the guitarist for the Irish band and he is synonymous with delays and pulsating effects, which have been key to the groups recorded output and their stadium shows all over the world. U2 are one of the bands that captivate an audience no matter where they go and a large part of this is down to the way that The Edge can dominate the stage with a little box of tricks.

Music, like most art, is subjective so there is no point in looking for the best guitar effects because the answer will be different for different people. If you are a budding guitarist, use your influences as a starting point but the best way to find the sound that is right for you is to go out there and try as many effects pedals or boxes that you can. This will give you a greater chance of stumbling across the sound that will help you stand out from the rest and give you a chance of obtaining rock n roll stardom like many of the other great guitarists.
