Everyone Is Beautiful But Not Everyone Sees It

The man Confucius seems to have had a saying to cover most matters of life and one of his thoughts about beauty was that everything has it but not everyone sees it.

This may sound very simple but in many societies and languages there are very similar observations. In Holland they say that every pot has its lid somewhere. Is it remarkable that ninety-nine per cent of the human race ends up spending most of their lives with one partner?

Every second week of March without fail the spectacular great black and white Stork lands on the top of the tree at the bottom of the garden at the home I have in south west Turkey. The Stork checks the nest and spends a few days making repairs. Within a week his female partner arrives and they both great each other with hours of clucking and beak tapping.

Within a couple of weeks eggs are laid and a few weeks later the chicks are hatched. From that moment they are both busy guarding and hunting for food which mostly consist of the plentiful toads and frogs in the area and occasional favourite food of snakes.

The chicks grow fast and eventually in early September they all leave on their five thousand mile journey back to the nest they have in Africa. This is a massive undertaking and is not a direct route as Storks never fly across seas or anywhere out of sight of land as they cannot take off from water.

With so many monogamous people it is a wonder that women still have to go to a beautician every week. Maybe it is vanity and maybe it is because they want to hang onto their looks for as long as possible. Perhaps that is a cynical view and the reason is no more than it makes them feel happier and if the side effect is a closer relationship with the husband or boyfriend then that is a bonus.

It is not just the female of the human race that likes to keep looking her best. Birds preen themselves hours a day and it's hard to believe it is not just all about keeping the feathers in good condition and free from fleas. Monkeys groom one another and comb with their nails.
