Everyone Can't Start Using Coupons, It Is A Secret And It Should Stay That Way

By:

There are lots of people who have never used a coupon. This is fantastic news for all of us who use coupons regularly. Coupons are issued by manufacturers to entice thrifty consumers to purchase their product over their competitors. The marketing behind this enticement is that the brand is better, and the consumer will switch long term. Most companies only expect that 2% of all the coupons issued will be redeemed. So long as redemption rates remain the same, we'll keep seeing coupons on all our favorite grocery items.

Most people don't redeem coupons because it seems like a small amount of money. This is true on a per coupon basis. One single $1 off your grocery bill will not save you on your household budget. However, when used in large quantities and at the right time, coupons can save consumers up to 75%. So as long as other shoppers do not catch onto using lots of coupons on several different items each time they shop, our coupon secret is safe.

The other reason people do not use coupons is because we were never taught how to use coupons in combination with store sales to achieve large discounts. We do not teach our kids how to use coupons, as a matter of fact, using coupons is not on any high school curriculum. It should be. If a shopper uses a coupon in combination with an in store sale, they can save 75% on their grocery purchase. If they then use 30 coupons per trip to the store, they will see huge savings.

Finally, time is the third reason most people do not use grocery coupons. They feel that the time it takes to collect the coupons and get ready to use them at the grocery store is too long. They would rather just pay full price. Hooray! I'm happy to meet those folks. They would rather pay $50 per hour more for their cart full of groceries than me. I usually spend one hour per week organizing, printing and clipping coupons. I usually also save an average of $50 per week. Shame on them, and good for me.

Yet, we can't really let everyone know about this coupon secret. You see, if everyone used coupons, then manufacturers would start issuing fewer coupons. They would see larger percentages of redemption, and would simply cut the number of coupons in circulation. Coupon users would not save as much money. So we really can't allow just anyone to start using coupons. Shhhh! Don't tell.
