Eve Could Not Resist That Apple

By:

We all know the story about that now famous apple. Apparently it was so sweet, so delicious that the first woman, could not resist and disobeyed a direct command to enjoy its delicious taste. The story about this poor little apple, that was not supposed to be eaten but was. What a wonderful story about a powerful little fruit called the apple

The tree responsible for bearing this little apple was placed in the heart of the Garden of Eden. It was a special tree, the center of attention, and a show-stopper -- literally. It was a majestic tree with strong limbs that were good for climbing and for bearing the heavy weight of its fruit. It had a dense canopy of foliage that not only provided shade for Adam and Eve, the humans who walked beneath it, but also shelter for the many flying things of the air and the crawly things of the earth. Birds constructed nests in the boughs, laid their eggs within, and raised their off-spring there. Insects borrowed beneath the bark and woodpeckers drilled beneath the bark to find those tasty morsels. It was a tree that proclaimed goodness to all who dwelled in its presence.

Eve was not tempted with the fruit of a cherry, peach, or banana tree - oh no! It was the most delicious, versatile, and tempting fruit of all: the apple. Listening to the voice of one who knew the garden well, the Serpent, Eve gave in to temptation. Who could blame her? She plucked the shiny, unblemished red (or was it golden?) apple from the limb and took a bite.

While there are some who criticize Eve for her choice, there are others who will be eternally grateful for her discovery. Eve knew a good thing when she saw it. She probably would have found it eventually, even without the assistance of the Serpent. I imagine that after the bolts of lightening and pillars of smoke had cleared from the garden, Eve asked Adam to make her a little basket and then the two of them returned to the scene of the crime to gather some more of the evidence. I also imagine that once back at their little homestead, Adam built a fire while Eve pared and sliced the fruits of their labor. I'm sure that after Adam gorged himself on roasted apples and apple pie, washed down with a good swig of apple juice, he gave Eve a big hug and a kiss and all was forgiven between the two of them.

Those descendants of Eve wise enough to recognize the potential of this fruit have since been creating gastronomical delicacies. Imagine what the world would be like if Eve had not taken the apple -- Heaven forbid! There would be no Williamsburg apple pie, no Waldorf salad, no candy apples, no applesauce, no apple juice, and no apple to place in the snout of a fine roasting swine. Where is the statue honoring the memory of Eve, the patron saint of all things apple?

Had it not been for her culinary curiosity, the world may have had to do without knowledge of the tasty, little English apples
