Evacuating An Area That Floodwaters Threaten

By:

Every year, hundreds to thousands of people succumb to injuries and even death from flood waters. These flood waters can come from a faulty dam, a tsunami from an underwater earthquake in the middle of the ocean, or, most commonly, a hurricane. The destruction that these natural and not-so-natural disasters bring upon the land is large. Many are displaced from their homes and need to stay elsewhere until repairs can be made. Businesses along the coast and even inland suffer the same fate and have to deal with the aftermath of the hurricane.

What is surprising is that some of these deaths could have been prevented had those people taken heed to the warnings and evacuated the area like they were supposed to. People sometimes let their natural habit of curiosity override their judgment and it makes them vulnerable to being attacked by these flood waters. Proof of how curiosity can kill us is demonstrated in videos of tsunamis that are about to come crashing onto the shore. Numerous videos are available on the internet that show how people will stand there and gawk at the massive wave that is headed their way. When they finally realize that the wave is actually dangerous, it is a little too late, and their lives are taken from them in a matter of seconds.

Weather activity is monitored regularly throughout the day, so the news can relay any recommendations of evacuation on their telecasts. Even though evacuation warnings will be broadcast, it is surprising to see that some people will sit back comfortably as if they could not possibly be affected by what is coming. Only when the storm has hit do they realize that they erred in their judgment and then they are left to suffer the consequences. In some rare cases, however, no warning will be given out because they did not know what was coming, and the best thing is to just be prepared and have some kind of emergency plan and kit for evacuating.

For the sake of you, your family, and your friends, it is important to take these kinds of warnings seriously. If and when warnings are given out, however, take it seriously and start packing up your belongings. If you have time to spare, clear out your bottom floor of your belongings and move them upstairs or place them on cinder blocks or in high areas so the water cannot reach them. Otherwise, get out of the area immediately. Your life and the life of your loved ones is dependent upon your choice.
