Etiquette For Online Dating - Do's And Don'ts

By:

Online dating may not be as hard as actual dating but there are still rules that you have to follow in the internet dating field. Some may take internet dating as a means of building relationships while others use it to find their one true soul mate. Whichever way you are using the many dating internet sites, here are a couple of do's and don't that you have to consider.

Do's

Even if you are not interested in someone, have the courtesy to send him or her a polite "rejection" message so that he or she will not pursue you and use more time in you. Have a template at hand to save time.

Do have a polite way of asking things to a person. Avoid very sensitive issues like his or her annual income or divorce questions when you are just getting to know a person.

Be honest about yourself in your conversations over the web. Provide details about who you are as a person so he or she will know what you can or cannot deliver.

When you are in the stage where you guys are still getting to know each other before meeting up, best to stick to topics that are not too much of a red flag like movies, the weather, etc.

Do observe usual chatting etiquette. WRITING THIS WAY MEANS YOU ARE SHOUTING. Also know the usual chat abbreviations as your potential date may use them.

Be very careful of what you type. Since tone cannot be expressed over the web, saying "You got to be kidding me," may come off as negative if you do not follow it up with the appropriate "smiley" face to show that you said it with a smile.

Don'ts

Never, ever lie in your profile. Even if you feel you are making a white lie, it is not excusable to do so. Not only are you tricking someone to like, you are also fooling yourself into thinking that so many dating site users like you when the fact is, they only like your make believe profile.

As with the profile, do not use a very misleading photo. Some use another person's (most probably an unsuspecting but gorgeous relative) picture just because they are not so photogenic. Others mislead by posting pictures of themselves 10 years ago. Use an updated photo taken in great lighting where you look presentable.

Don't be too giving in terms of personal information like your real address, full name or date of birth as these are not details you would give to a stranger over the internet.

Do not be too pushy. If someone you emailed or messaged said that he or she is not interested, respect that. Do not think of it as that use being coy and that is not a signal for you to send him or her another message. Desperation is not a good smell online.

If you are already seriously dating someone you met online, you need to change your status in your dating site. Do not entertain other inquiries.
