An organic compound that is widely used as automotive antifreeze is known as ethylene glycol. It is known to be a pure, odorless, syrupy, colorless, and sweet tasting liquid. Its use in automotive antifreeze is known to be used as a heat transfer fluid.

Although it may not seem like it is toxic, it is. It is a highly poisonous chemical compound and if it is ingested in the slightest bit then it can result in death. Also, it is a precursor to polymers; it is not at all similar to di-ethylene glycol - which is a heavy ether diol, and it is not similar to polyethylene glycol- which is a nontoxic polyether polymer. Therefore, it is suggested that you do not mistake the three.

When it is used as a heat transfer fluid it is better if it is used below thirty two degrees Fahrenheit. The primary use of it is automotive antifreeze. It also has many other uses other than just as automotive antifreeze some of its other uses are. Airplanes and boats use this type as a deicing solution. It is also used in paint because it serves as a photographic developing solution. It is also used for ball point pens and also for ink in stamp pads.

The reason that it is best used in these products is because it has a low freezing point. Its low freezing point serves to have a large benefit to machines that may be out in a cooler climate. When it is used for airplanes and boats, it is known as di-ethylene glycol.

When it is mixed with water - 60% is the glycol and 40% is water, the hydrogen bond is disrupted when the dissolving occurs. This way the freezing point changes to nine degrees Fahrenheit and the freezing point of the mixture is decreased.

It has its freezing point when it is mixed with 70% water. For this reason, it is not used as antifreeze water. It is also used in the plastic industry. The glycol is used to make plastic bottles for soda, and when it is used for soda is known as polyethylene glycol. The boiling point and the freezing point help with the formation of natural gas catharses.

Although ethylene glycol is a toxic chemical compound, it can be found in various vaccines. It is also used in shoe polishes and dyes as a small percentage of the ingredients such as one to two percent. Ethylene glycol has many uses, picking the right use and the right glycol is very important.
