Makar Sankranti is a festival thats celebrated throughout India with equal fervor. Down South, it is known as Pongal and the celebration includes a different set of practices. However, in other parts of India the celebration follows more or less a similar pattern with kite-flying being a major practice. Youngsters and especially men eagerly await Makar Sankranti for indulging in limitless kite-flying for two and three days. These 2-3 days of Makar Sankranti is indeed a spectacle since the sky is dotted with numerous colorful kites swaying across.
Men and boys look forward to kite-flying on Sankranti the most. Ethnic Kurta Pyjama or
Churidar Kurtas are a popular choice of outfit during Makar Sankranti. The major reason being apart from the ethnic look it exudes which is desired during such traditional Indian festivals, it also happens to be very comfortable. Since kite-fliers practically spend the whole day on the terrace flying kites, cotton Kurta Pyjamas and cotton Churidar Kurtas are appropriate. Made of lightweight cotton fabric, these prove to be extremely comfortable. Cotton Kurta Pyjama or Churidar Kurtas featuring minimal embroidery such as embroidered neckline, collars and cuffs are preferable over gorgeous and heavily embroidered Churidar Kurtas for practical reasons. Another prevalent trend is to pair the Kurta with a pair of jeans or trousers instead of Churidar or Pyjama. This combination gives a contemporary touch along with maintaining the ethnic look and hence is quite popular amongst men. While during the day-time its best to stick to simple and comfortable cotton Kurta Pyjamas, the evenings are the time to bring out all the gorgeous silk Churidar Kurtas, silk Kurta Pyjamas, brocade Churidar Kurta, art silk Kurta Pyjama, tussar silk Churidar Kurta, etc. Such attractive outfits further adorned with ornate embroidery are great for Sankranti evenings when its time for get-togethers with family and friends.
