So you have your new computer and you want to connect to the internet. But what are your options. You have heard about wireless internet but your PC can with Cat5e Ethernet cable. Yes wireless, or wifi to give it is common name is convenient. You don't need any wires and visitors to your home or office can easily join your network and use your internet connection. However wifi does have it's problems. People living in older houses often complain of signal black spots, these are areas of the home when the signal can't reach, it's usually due to thick walls or floors. If you do get a signal it can often be quite slow depending on the speed of your wireless router.

By far the best method of connecting to a network for internet access or files sharing is by using an Ethernet cable. But with so many variations on the market how do you know which one to choose? The two most commonly used are Cat5e and Cat6. A Cat5e cable offers speeds up to 100 mbs. This is ideal for most home or office environments, it will easily handle data transfer and allow surfing the internet at decent speeds. Cat5e cables are supplied with modems by many Broadband internet service providers in the United Kingdom.

When purchasing your Cat5e cable you will have the option of a shielded cable. This type of cable offers a layer of foil wrapped around the internal core and as the name suggests it shields the cable. Shielding is particularly important when you need to cover distances over 10 meters. Ethernet cables can be used in distances up to 100 meters. You may struggle to find a pre assembled cable at this length, you can make your own cables by purchasing a reel of cable of cable and adding plugs. Reels are available in lengths of 300 meters, they are commonly used in office environments when setting up a network.

In the UK you should expect to pay anything from five to ten pounds for a ten meter shielded network cable. They can be sourced from online retailers, many of whom offer very competitive pricing and offer next day delivery. Indeed you may even struggle to find longer length cables over 10 meters at your local computer shop as there is not much call for these lengths and the shops don't like stocking items that don't sell well.
