Ethernet And Rj45; Keeping Industry In Motion

By:

In the technological world there are numerous products that are not exactly inspiring. These items however, while not being the most exciting are truly useful to the modern world and in essence keep the cogs of economy, business and home life turning; one such item is the RJ45. I hear you scream what is a RJ45? It is hoped this article will be able to answer this question.

Put simply the RJ45 is a small piece of plastic that connects a computer to a network. The RJ prefix stands for Registered Jack and more technically it is a connector with eight wires that is most regularly used to connect computers to local area networks and Ethernets. While the RJ45 may have a passing resemblance to the RJ11, the connector used to link phones to sockets; it is slightly wider and can hence handle more data. Without this essential adaptor it would be impossible for many businesses to function.

Registered jacks are used throughout the telecommunications industry, the RJ45 being just one of the many variants available on the market. It is the ubiquitous Ethernet connection although other types are also used for particular purposes.

Fundamentally Ethernet is a communications protocol that allows for the local area networks to be created. Its genesis is believed to have occurred as early as 1973 with a man named Bob Metcalfe and the efforts of Digital, Intel and Xerox. As a result of this work D.I.X Ethernet became the standard LAN for the world. An essential part of the Ethernet is the RJ45, without it hard line connections could not be made and hence computers could not be linked.

The name Ethernet was developed by Metcalfe himself. He named the network after ether, the passive substance that at the time was believed to be present throughout the universe carrying light. This process of carrying light was likened to the way data was transferred around the Ethernet network and hence the name stuck.

The development of Ethernet went hand in hand with the evolution of the RJ45 and connectors more widely. The early versions of the registered jack, built during the 1970's were relatively bulky although modern manufacturing and the use of higher quality materials have meant that the RJ45 and its cousins can now carry more information without sacrificing a smaller size.

The RJ45, as a bi product of the development of Ethernet has revolutionised the way in which data is transferred around offices and even the home. Without networks the paperless workspace would simply not be possible. Today networks are being utilised to their fullest extent, with intranets set up workers are able to see tasks and projects in real time, allowing for greater cooperation and communication between work colleagues.

Without the development of Ethernet, RJ45 and its counterparts this would simply not be possible. The wheels of industry would grind to a halt and economic collapse would soon follow. While it may not be an extremely interesting bit of kit, the importance of this little connector cannot be underestimated.
