Essential Tips For First Time Parents

By:

Caring for a newborn can bring both joy and apprehension to first time parents. Like them, you are probably anxious and nervous because you have absolutely no idea how to properly care for your baby. Get a sense of what you're supposed to do by reading this article.

First things first, it is all about hygiene. Your hands should be clean all the time, so always wash it or apply hand sanitizer. Infections can happen to newborns as they have a very weak immune system, so keep things sanitary as much as possible. Caring for a sick infant is no joke.

Whether you do it out of joy or anger, never shake your newborn baby. You might think this act is harmless but in fact, it can lead to serious internal hemorrhage in your child's brain. Much worse, it can even cause death. Instead of doing this, you can tickle his feet or blow him gently on the cheek.

Make sure that you always cradle and support the neck and head of your baby whenever you are holding him in a upright position or you are laying him on his back. When transporting your baby, be certain that he is secured properly in the carrier, stroller or car seat. You should steer clear of bouncy and dangerous activities for your child's safety. Also, don't shake your baby with his knees or throw him in the air like a toy.

Aside from these tips, it also important that you know about diapering. It may be a tedious task, but it is necessary to keep your baby comfortable and healthy. Make sure that you always have clean diapers, fasteners (if you are using cloth diapers), ointment for diaper rash, warm water in a container, and cleaning materials like cotton balls, wash cloth, or baby wipes.

When bowel movements or wet diapers occur, lay your baby on his or her back properly, and then immediately remove the diaper. The baby's private parts should be gently wiped. For a baby boy, removing the diaper should be done slowly and surely. So many moms and dads have experienced a golden fountain when they took it off while their baby boy was right in the middle of peeing. For a girl, both sides of her bottom should be wiped in order to avoid a urinary tract infection. Ointments should be applied should rashes occur. Once a new diaper is attached, don't forget to wash your hands.

Avoiding rashes is easy if you make sure that you do the following tips. One, always change your baby's diaper after each bowel movement. Two, apply cream after each cleaning to prevent diaper rashes. In fact, ointment with zinc oxide is pretty much perfect. Three, make sure that you allow your baby's bottom to breathe by allow them to go diaper-free from time to time.

From putting a diaper on your baby to other baby handling techniques, these parenting tips will take you, the new parent, from being naive to skilled in no time at all!
