Essential Information To Know About Social Security Disability Benefits

By:

Since the subject of social security disability benefits is not necessarily a class that is taught in the mainstream public school, not many people know much about them. Learning about them can be incredibly overwhelming as there is so much information to absorb. Also, various restrictions and limitations depend upon the state in which an applicant is residing. Those who live in Texas, for instance, will likely have different guidelines to deal with than those who live in New Jersey. So what type of information should be known about social security disability benefits?

First, it's good to realize that there are in fact two different kinds of disability programs that can be obtained from the social security administration offices. The first is referred to as disability insurance and the second is referred to as supplemental security income. There are definitely some differences as well as some similarities between the two. When it comes to some of the main differences, one might note that the disability insurance is funded by FICA taxes while the welfare program is funded by general revenues. Also, the insurance provides the opportunity to reopen a claim after four years have passed while the supplemental program only allows a two year window to reopen a claim.

The supplemental program does not offer a work trial period; however, the insurance program does provide a nine month trial. Those who prefer to apply for their applications online are in luck with the insurance program but those who are in need of supplemental are not allowed to apply online for that. These differences mentioned here are not the only differences to these two programs but they are some of the most significant. There are some significant similarities between the two programs also. For instance, they both have the same definition of a person who qualifies as 'disabled'. Also, benefits for both programs increase after each year.

It's important to note that for both programs, not just anyone can qualify for disability status. The actual granting of that status depends on the outcome of a five step process which is not finished overnight. Those who truly are disabled, though, can receive help through either of these programs as long as they go about their application process through the correct ways. Since there are often intricacies and extenuated circumstances, appeals may be necessary. It's important to have a social security disability lawyer to help out with something like that should that need ever arise.
