Essential Hearing Treatment Information

By:

A person doesn't put much thought about their sense of hearing believing it will stay with them until the end. Regardless what people think, hearing disorders can affect people of any age, gender or race. A person first needs to know what the cause of hearing loss is, so as to avoid it, then find out what can be done if already been afflicted.

Hearing loss is a very big deal as it is the most common birth defect among babies. It also doesn't matter how old you are as both children and adults are susceptible to losing their hearing. Other common causes of hearing loss are genetics, medicines and stress.

A very common cause of hearing loss is when a person is surrounded all the time by very loud environmental noise. Examples of these kinds of noises are sounds coming from an airport where airplanes land and takeoff every few minutes. Turning on your ipod or radio on really loud or using your headphones with loud music can cause havoc in your ears.

Hearing aids are a common and proven way to effectively treat hearing impairment. If you thought there was just one kind of hearing aids then you are wrong, as there are more than 10 different classes. Hearing aids in general are simply amplifiers of sound to the person wearing it.

The class of the hearing aid can be determined by where the hearing aid is worn. Hearing aids made to be worn just behind the ear, consisting of a case, tube and ear molds are what is commonly called as BTE. The BTE is often prescribed by doctors because of its practicality, being a device worn outside the ear, free from damage caused by moisture and earwax.

The cochlear is a very important part of the ear and one solution specialist are now prescribing to patients is getting a cochlear implant. The cochlear or bionic ear implant needs to be surgically implanted underneath the scalp and right behind the affected ear. The cochlear implant works by picking up sounds and speech, then converting these into tiny electronic impulses that are sent through electrodes to nerves that are connected to our brains, which our brain can distinguish as sound.

The parts of the cochlear implant are a microphone that picks up sound, a speech processor which filters audible speech, a transmitter which sends signals, a receiver and stimulator which converts signals into electric impulses and an array of electrodes that send the impulses to the nerves connected to the brain. Cochlear implants are for the average person, extremely expensive and will cost an arm and a leg. The success of the operation lies in a lot of factors such as a person's hearing history, cause of hearing loss, amount of residual hearing, health status and commitment to rehabilitation or post implant therapy.

Gene therapy is also a new form of hearing treatment that is being looked at by specialists. Gene therapy is a procedure wherein a person with damaged cochlea cells can have them regrown or grown. Gene therapy however, is still in its early and infancy stages as research and testing are still being done.

Hearing treatments are the worst case scenarios in dealing with unavoidable hearing loss. Each hearing treatment available have their own pros and cons and only a specialist or doctor familiar with the technology and science can know for sure. Life isn't the same when you don't have your sense of hearing.
