Essential Features To Look For In A Plastic Surgery Facility

By:

If you are thinking of having some type of cosmetic procedure, it is important to choose the right physician. But, there are other factors to consider that are just as important.

Checking out the plastic surgery facility just like you would the surgeon is essential. This is about much more than just beautiful artwork on the walls and comfortable seating in the waiting area. While comfort is part of it, quality and safety are far more important.

Here are some things to look for when you choose a plastic surgery facility:

1. Accreditation

Either the plastic surgery facility you choose should be ambulatory certified or it should be adjacent to or in close proximity to an accredited hospital. This is very important in the case of emergency during surgery. Certification means that they are equipped to and trained to handle medical emergencies.

2. Equipment

Is the facility working with the latest technology or at least recent as of the last few years? The cosmetic surgery industry is quickly advancing and new technology and techniques are developed every year for safer, more efficient and better results. You don't want some archaic technique to be used on your body when there is something better out there.

3. Condition

The facility should be clean. Not just the surface stuff like the furniture, walls and bathroom, but the equipment as well. The risk of bacterial infections being transmitted from unsterilized equipment must be minimal. Not only is it a safety issue, but it is also a reflection on the staff and surgeons. If you can't trust them to get their space clean, can you really trust them to take proper care with your procedure?

4. Certifications

You want to make sure that all the staff working at the facility are certified in their areas of expertise. Your plastic surgeon should be board certified and licensed to practice plastic surgery. The nurses and technicians should be trained and certified to use the equipment if a surgeon is not required.

It is also very important to make sure the anesthesiologist is certified. This is an important job as many things can go wrong just because of the anesthesia. Aestheticians and dermatologists that may be on staff should also have the appropriate training and certification. All of these credentials should be displayed on the walls, but if not, don't be afraid to ask or do an Internet search.

5. Comfort

This one is purely aesthetic and a more personal preference than necessity, but it is also important. You want to feel comfortable in the facility and most places strive to offer a soothing atmosphere. While the actual procedure rooms will be filled with equipment and have a more hospital feel, the waiting area and consultation rooms can be more conducive to calming your nerves.

Take all of these things into consideration when choosing the plastic surgeon that is going to perform your procedure. It is your best chance of having a safe and successful procedure as well as a healthy recovery. You have to be pro-active about your health and not take for granted that all physicians and all facilities are up to par.
