Environmentally Considerate Travel

By:

Responsible tourists are those who look for ways to minimise this impact, and search for ethical tour operators, shop responsibly and help to protect endangered species while on holiday.
There are many ways in which the average tourist can enjoy a holiday abroad, and still help the environment and local people.
When you book your holiday, speak to your travel operator about your destination and find out where your money will be going to while you are there. Choosing a locally owned hotel or bed and breakfast will benefit the people of the town or village, while spending your money at a corporate hotel will not.
A good way to ensure you minimise your impact on the locals while on holiday is to take out a good travel insurance policy before you leave. This way the local people will not have to be burdened with you if you fall ill or are injured. Often they are themselves without good health care, and will be unable to help you. A travel insurance policy will mean you can afford the best hospitals in the area.
Book trips and activities which help the local economy and people and aim to protect indigenous wildlife, and also try to use tour operators and guides which support sustainable and environmentally ethical business practises.
The amount of carbon emitted by your flight could do more damage to the environment than any other aspect of your travels, so if you are only making a short journey then consider other methods of transport such as trains, ferries or coaches.
Help the local economy by buying local produce - shop at markets or local grocers and buy local crafts and products, but avoid products made from endangered species, hardwoods or shells. These are often harvested illegally and continued buying of these products will lead to many species going extinct.
Avoid activities which exploit wild animals, such as swimming with dolphins, watching dancing bear performances and having your photo taken with lion cubs as this could encourage animal cruelty in some areas.
