Environmental Services For Sustainable Developments

Environmental Services For Sustainable Developments

By:

Environmental services form the core of Government services that keep the modern world free from diseases. Waste management and water treatment ensure that people living in developed countries can go about daily life without fear of contracting diseases that are potentially life threatening. Many people may be aware of the work carried out at water treatment facilities and at landfill sites, but as the concerns for the environment mount, there are moves toward providing sustainable environmental services that maintain the high standards that already exist.

New sustainable housing developments incorporate water and waste management into the very fabric of the development by forming reed bed sewage treatment areas. These reed beds are incredibly effective at breaking down effluent due to the efficiency of the leaves to transfer oxygen through the stem and out through the root system. This action causes a high presence of micro organisms that populate aerobic, anaerobic and anoxic areas.

As the sewage moves through the bed, the micro organisms break the components down in a way similar to the more conventional ways of treating sewage. The system is so effective that environmental services from larger water companies in some parts of Britain are implementing the reed bed system to treat local effluent.

To maximise the beneficial environmental impact of sustainable housing developments, reed bed sewerage is used alongside rainwater collection to provide grey water for washing, cleaning and sanitation. The use of treated water to flush toilets, wash clothes and water gardens has long been considered a waste of good water, and there is no need to use water that is expensive to treat for anything other than drinking water.

Recycling and composting also feature highly in the environmental services on such sites. It has been demonstrated that a family's waste can be reduced considerably if all kitchen waste is composted, and packaging recycled. In fact, it has been proven that when a whole community work together to facilitate the running of localised environmental services, there is very little risk of infection from diseases that were once prevalent before contemporary systems were put in place.

The major risk comes from contamination through mismanagement of waste, where bacteria from waste enters water that is ingested. Through correct consultation with an environmental services specialist, a sustainable housing development can ensure that waste facilities and water collection are sufficiently separated. There are many developments already in existence where sustainable waste management is part of a successful template for sustainable living.
