Environmental Health And Safety Within The Workplace

By:

Health and safety is incredibly important within the workplace and it is the responsibility is of the company to ensure that their workplaces are free from hazards that can cause workers personal injury, illness or suffering through negligence. In every industry each work place has risks that are specific to their sector. For example a nuclear power plant will have different environmental health and safety issues than that of an office. Here in this article we look at how health and safety is approached within the workplace.

Although an office environment is different to a nuclear power plant there are still health and safety concerns for physical injury. Environmental health and safety issues within an office may concern hazards such as sound pollution, light, vibration and radiation. Injuries can also be sustained from falling objects, collisions within the office, slips and releases of energy such as a fire or electrical shock. All of these potential problems are highlighted within a health and safety risk assessment which is made up of four main sections.

Risk assessments are designed to identify all of the risks within a work environment, they also look at who is considered at risk and how high or low these potential risks are. Action plans are then put into place to ensure that the impact of these risks are minimised. An environmental health and safety officer then has to inform everyone that is at risk potentially of the assessment results. Commonly within work places employees are trained in health and safety so they are able to avoid potential hazards and know the correct procedure to be carried out within an emergency.

The training can be as simple as showing workers how to lift heavy objects correctly as to not damage their backs to practising the fire drill. For issues such as pollution control levels are constantly monitored within the workplace to ensure they meet requirements. Air quality and light levels can affect workers with tiredness and dehydration as sickness and illness cost companies thousands each year it is important to employers to make sure their air conditioning and light levels are all correct.

The main aim of environmental health and safety officers and professionals is to make sure that all employees are able to work within a safe environment that looks out for both their health and welfare. Working in a safe environment is a basic human right and environmental health and safety professionals are responsible for this.
