Entrepreneurial Lessons To Learn From Madam C.j. Walker

The driving force of Madam C.J. Walker is clearly defined in her own words when she penned "I had to make my own living and my own opportunity. But I made it! Don't sit down and wait for the opportunities to come. Get up and make them." This (MO) aka mode of operation summed up her message to any entrepreneur who has ever realized their dreams or haven't yet realized them. Madam C.J. Walker, the first African American woman to become a self made millionaire, embodied this principle and is an example of how any entrepreneur can learn to become a self made millionaire in their own right with their own choices and efforts.

She learned that by helping others solve problems they were confronted with, she in turn was being helped to solve her own problems. She learned the power of filling a need with an affordable solution. She did her homework when researching a solution to her own needs and struck on the notion that there must be others seeking answers to problems they were facing with no answers. She sought out a target sector to promote products to others needing help. She learned and taught that the first rule of entrepreneurship is to meet a need. People will respond to a solution for sale, better than to a product for sale.

Madame C. J. Walker learned that passion for a solution is a must if anyone is to enjoy the success of being a entrepreneur. Not only did she allow her passion for the product and its solutions to shine, but her passion for promoting it as well was a very good selling point. In other words she believed and stood 100% behind the product she was promoting and selling.

She also learned to develop her own products and selling someone else's products in not such a bad thing either, but the real success and riches come from ones own products. She realized this early on and began to develop her own brand of hair care products. Her own products allowed her to work for herself and not someone else. She learned that this a very important fact to remember if you are focused on being a successful entrepreneur; work for yourself.

She Was Aggressive with Sales. She traveled throughout the Southern states of the U.S, aggressively promoting and selling her products as a door to door saleswoman. She did whatever she had to do to get her products to those who needed them most. True entrepreneurs do not get tired of selling and would aggressively and sometimes, shamelessly promote their products.

She Created Multiple Streams. It would have made a lot of sense for Madam Walker to settle for merely selling her products and she would have made a good bundle. But she chose to diversify her income and created multiple streams out of that product. She created a school to teach people how to use her products and had numerous licensed agents. An entrepreneur knows that he or she needs to build on present success and makes plans and strategies to do so. Being an entrepreneur means that you need to be relentless and passionate about what you do. Think smart and think ahead. Madam C.J Walker embodied all these and more; every aspiring entrepreneur (and even some established ones) have much to learn from her life.
