Enjoying Water Sports Year-round In Arizona

It may be hard to believe, but the desert areas of Arizona offer some of the best water sports venues anywhere in the United States! Natural lakes, reservoirs, and rivers abound in the wild and arid landscape. The greatest part of enjoying water sports in the Grand Canyon state is that the weather permits year-round recreation. Here is a look at a few of Arizona's popular water holes. If you are a native, or plan to visit soon, you will discover that there is plenty of wet fun to be had.

Desert and water are not two terms that you usually hear partnered, but there are over 16,000 acres of desert lakes in the Phoenix area. The aptly named Lake Pleasant is the most popular, but there are many reservoirs to enjoy also, including: Apache and Roosevelt.

Lake Pleasant, north of Phoenix, is part of the Maricopa County Parks system. It is an important artificial reservoir for this part of the desert and was formed by the building of the Waddell Dam in 1928.

Its surface area covers 7500 feet and its depth reaches 70 feet. Filled by the Agua Fria River, Lake Pleasant is surrounded by scenic mountains and watched over by electric blue skies. It's a very popular destination for water enthusiasts who enjoy water skiing, jet skiing, and sailing. It is also kept stocked with fish for those who prefer angling.

Roosevelt Lake is the largest body of water in the central part of the state, boasting 88 miles of shoreline. In fact, in 1911 it was the biggest manmade lake in the world. Not only does this lake offer all the amenities enjoyed by boaters of all types, it is also a great place to bird watch. It lies on the migratory route of a large number of species, and in the winter you might even catch glimpses of eagles and osprey. It is also a bass fisherman's paradise.

Apache Lake is located in the Tonto National Forest, about an hour's drive away from Phoenix. Second only in size to Roosevelt Lake, it offers over 2,000 acres of water filled enjoyment. It was created by the Horse Mesa Dam and completed in 1927. Because it's located on the Apache Trail, the lake area distinguishes itself from others by offering not only water fun, but a number of hiking trails as well if you prefer to stay dry.

Besides the breathtaking scenery and abundance of water venues, the great part of boating Arizona is that it can be a year-round experience. Hot summers and mild winters without freezing temperatures mean that any time is boating time in the Grand Canyon State. Enjoy!
