Enjoying Golf Breaks Even In Colder Months

By:

During the colder months of the year Golfers wouldnt expect to be able to take golf breaks in the UK, and perhaps would prefer to play in warmer climes, however, for the dedicated few there a number of courses throughout the UK that are open for the die-hard golfers that cant wait to get out on the course for a round or two of their favourite sport.

The key to being able to play during the winter months is to choose a course that has good drainage and one that is well set up to cope with difficult weather conditions and the effects it has on the course.

One such course that is popular during the winter months is the Thorpeness Hotel and Golf Club. Based in Thorpeness in Suffolk, the course is situated in a peaceful location next to the Meare and is only 5 minutes walk from the beach and being laid on sandy soil and in a drier climate than most, means that this course is extremely popular for a winter golf break, in fact, the course only lost 1 days play during 2009 due to the weather conditions.

Designed by James Braid in 1922, the golf course winds through silver birch, pine trees, gorse and heather and was described by the Sunday Telegraph Golfing Guide as Reminiscent of the inland glories of Sunningdale and Woodhall Spa.

The hotel has recently gone through an extensive refurbishment, and with rooms overlooking either the course or the meare provides a tranquil setting for their visitors.

Thorpeness offers a number of golf breaks and is popular with local residents and visitors throughout the year. The hotel also caters for non-golfers so makes for a great family break and being so close to the beach can offer plenty of coastal walks on this stretch of stunning coastline.

A short distance from Thorpeness is the traditional fishing town of Aldeburgh where you can visit the many antique shops, boutiques and even visit Aldeburghs very own cinema, which will certainly occupy the non-golfers amongst the group.
