Enjoy The History And Culture Of Gdansk On A Northern Europe Cruise

By:

Choosing Northern Europe cruises for your next holiday will allow you to visit a host of new places, including the fascinating Polish city of Gdansk.

In fact, this port of call will enable you to visit three cities in a single day. The Tricity area of Gdansk Bay on the Baltic coast includes historic Gdansk, the seaside resort of Sopot and the port of Gdynia, where your liner will dock.

Although technically three separate cities, they are so close together it is possible to enjoy the best of all of them during your day in Poland. The area is rich in history, so there is plenty to see and do.

Gdansk's Old Town is one of the most memorable places you will visit during your cruise in Northern Europe. The city was one of the main players in the Hanseatic League and that brought wealth that enabled the construction of some fine buildings between the 15th and 17th centuries.

If you begin your tour at Abraham van den Blocke's spectacular Golden Gate and walk down to the Long Market, you will see many of Gdansk's most famous buildings, including the town hall, Neptune's Fountain and the lavish homes built for noblemen and merchants - like Lion Castle and Schumann House.

As well as the period buildings, the Old Town is also home to a selection of unusual boutiques, galleries and jewellery shops, together with cafes and restaurants selling traditional local cuisine.

If you have an interest in modern history, you are sure to be aware of the Solidarity movement and the role Gdansk's shipyard workers played in ending communist rule in Poland. Some of the key events in the country's development are remembered in a fascinating museum dedicated to the trade union in the city.

You may also wish to spend some of your time in Poland travelling to see the medieval gothic Malbork Castle or perhaps taking in a cultural experience. An organ recital in the magnificent surroundings of Oliwa Cathedral is certain to be a memorable experience, but you may prefer to round off your day by enjoying a performance of some of Fryderyk Chopin's works in Gdynia before heading back to your cruise ship.
