English Royals Make History

English Royals Make History

By:

The Eighty five years old Queen Elizabeth II, made history with her four-day state visit to the Irish Republic, Ireland. She was the first English monarch to visit since independence.

The state visit was said to be vital if the two nations are to move on to create mutual respect between them.

"You turn down your music, you give back their football, this is life", said Eunan O"Halpin, Professor of Contemporary Irish History, as he likened the royal visit to two neighbours who don't particularly like each other, starting to get along.

For the Queen's visit to be considered as serious, some felt it was vital for her to visit places like Croke Park, the scene of one of the worst massacres, where British troops fired on civilians watching a football match in 1902, killing 14 people.

"Mary McAleese's presidency has had the theme of building bridges. This is one very important bridge" said Jane Ohlmeyer, Professor of Modern History at Trinity College Dublin.

The English royals are in the midst of making history on several fronts.
Queen Elizabeth II will celebrate her Diamond Jubilee her 60th year of rule, in 2012 as the 2nd longest reigning British Monarch, after Queen Victoria who died in 1901, who ruled for 63 years.

62 years old, Prince Charles is the longest-serving heir apparent in English history. Queen Victoriason, King Edward VII previously held that record. He ruled for just 9 years, prior to his death in 1910.

Prince Charles was the first royal to be involved in a civil wedding, when he married Camilla Parker Bowels on the 9th April in 2005, after divorcing Princess Diana, his first wife.

The Archbishop of the Church of England, the Prime Minister and his cabinet, refused to give permission to Princess Margaret, Queen Elizabeth's sister, to marry a divorced man, 16 years her senior, who was promptly banished overseas only in the early 1950s.

Princess Margaret was merely 3rd in line to the English throne, as Queen Elizabeth had two children already, Charles and Anne.

The newlywed Prince William has being polled as being the most trusted member of the royal family, in front of his grandmother, the Queen. He is also high in the history making stakes.
