England's Home Counties

The Home Counties is a term which refers to the counties of South England which border London. The Home Counties make wonderful weekend getaway destination for folks who live and work in London. England's Home Counties are Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Dorset, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Kent, Middlesex, Oxfordshire, Surrey and Sussex. Each has its own charm, culture, tourist attractions and traditions. Here's a list of events for a few of them.

Bedfordshire:

Bedforshire is a wonderful place to go and enjoy a festival. Some big ones include:

River Festival:

The Bedford River Festival is held biannually on the banks of the River Great Ouse. It began in 1978 to celebrate the completion of a navigable water route between Bedford and the coast. Bedford River Festival is the second largest free outdoor event in England after Notting Hill Carnival.

Luton Carnival:

Luton International Carnival takes place on the May bank holiday weekend is attended by over 150,000 people every year.

Woburn Oyster Festival:

Who doesn't love oysters? If you're an oyster fan, or a food fan in general, it is well worth checking out the oyster festival in Woburn one September.

Berkshire:

From theatre to fine arts, there is no shortage of culture in Berkshire. For instance, this summer East Berks Operatic Society is putting on another production of Allan Bennett's 'Talking Heads'. And in Woodley there is a fabulous farmer's market that lasts all summer long.

Buckinghamshire:

Roald Dahl Festival:

It's coming up very shortly so make sure to turn out for this spectacular festival on Saturday July 2. The day is dedicated to celebrating the wonderful works of the internationally renown author. There are arts and crafts, live music and dancing in the streets.

Chiltern Steam Rally:

If cars and engines are more your thing than literary celebrations, then why not head to the Chiltern Steam Rally. There are 40 traction engines, vintage vehicles including cars, motor cycles, lorries, tractors and stationary engines as well as model and craft tents.

Essex:

Essex is home to several of the country's most impression historic houses and sites, including Colchester Castle Museum, Audley End House and Gardens, Chelmsford Cathedral, Queen Elizabeth's Hunting Lodge, St. John's Abbey Gate and more.

There is a ton to in and around the home counties. If you can't decide on one place why not take a hot air balloon and fly over a few?
