Contrary to common belief that the English are only obsessed with cricket, there are an equal number of football loving fans in the country too. And the one event that they all look forward too is the World Cup event organised by the International Federation of Association Football or FIFA. Passionate followers of the game wish to see the Prize Cup travelling to their country, and staying there for the next four years.

England's Victories at the World Cup

Forty years ago, England footballers were considered a force to reckon with. The team consisting of glorious players like Jeff Hurst, Bobby Moore, the Charlton brothers, and Alan Ball, to name just a few - brought home the Cup, after having defeated West Germany. And that was when delighted fans hoisted the English Flag in all its glory!

Unfortunately, it was a downward path, thereafter. The Italia 90 was lost due to penalties; so was Euro 96. The World Cups of 1998 and 2002 provided some ray of hope, but English footballers again lost out in the final games. What was heartening, however, was the high-ranking performance of the players in all these competitions. Hope flares eternal, always, in the Englishman's breast! Sven-Goran Eriksson and his lion-hearted team members have outclassed their opponents several times in recent matches. The "hope of the country", Wayne Rooney, is laid up with a broken metatarsal injury, but his doctors are optimistic of a good recovery. He might not be available for the first few matches, but can take part in the crucial ones. Gerard will play in his stead till then. Thus, the English Flag has not stopped waving in their support! After all, the English football squad is still considered one among the best in the world.

Country-wide Support for England Footballers

Now, if you are an Englander and a follower of this game, you will be glad to know that you are not alone in rooting for your team; most of your countrymen are with you. Further, researchers have come up with amazing statistics - 76% of the Northern Irish and 83% of the Welsh are also prepared to back Sven-Goran Eriksson and his team. There is a strong belief that England will bring the World Cup home. So do not forget to keep your flag ready for this much-awaited event, or better still, grab a variety of flags to show your support!

Enthusiastic fans (like you) are bent upon garnering as much support for the English team as possible. So, flags are being displayed on houses, buildings, cabs, and so on. The idea is to generate as much excitement as possible.

The town councils, however, had earlier banned the display of these flags and stickers. They seriously believed that public safety would be hampered, especially if cab drivers stuck them on their vehicles. But the public refused to take the ban lying down, and came out in protest. So councils have now permitted open display of the flag, provided there is no form of branding and safety is not compromised with.
