Engineering Consultants Tackle Climate Change

Engineering Consultants Tackle Climate Change

By:

With the G8 summit well under way, the state of the environment is a hot topic. It has been recognised by the governments of every country that a cut in greenhouse gas emissions is imperative. Critics of the talks however are saying that although targets are being set, viable plans are not being put into action. The debate continues over the path engineering consultants should take when advising what technology is best for providing energy. It appears that lack of funds and lack of appropriate technology are the major obstacles for focussing on an appropriate solution.

Recently, environmental protesters have targeted engineering consultants who have put in a tender to build a coal fuelled power station. If plans go ahead, the power plant will be the first coal powered station to be built in the UK in thirty years. Campaigners' fear that the Governments plan to introduce more power plants that use fossil fuels is taking a dangerous step in the wrong direction when it comes to tackling global warming.

The technology has been given the green light by the government and it is expected that four will eventually be built. It is claimed that the new style power station will be a fundamental component in plans to reduce carbon emissions as agreed by all EU countries. The carbon dioxide emitted by burning coal will be captured and stored, providing a clean source of energy. Carbon capture and storage is said to be the only viable way to meet emissions targets and provide enough energy according to some engineering consultants.

Although there are many ideas for providing energy from renewable sources, so far no single technology has been able to provide a standalone solution to energy provision on a commercial scale. Engineering consultants are however beginning to target individuals in an attempt to promote generating energy from renewable sources. The Energy Saving Trust, who offer advice on energy efficiency have now mapped the country with a wind speed predictor in a bid to inform the public whether or not it is worth investing in alternative energy privately.

This tool makes it possible to determine if a micro wind turbine will generate enough power to recover costs. The application calculates the area's wind speed and whether the turbine will be mounted in a built up area or not before giving an efficiency prediction. Generating energy on a small scale from alternative technologies is considered to be a positive step towards meeting emission targets, even if it just means easing the burden on the new coal fired power stations.
