Engineering Consultants In Sustainable House Building

Engineering Consultants In Sustainable House Building

By:

There are many ideas that are being placed on the table when it comes to creating cost effective housing solutions that will meet future legislations regarding carbon emissions and sustainability. The move away from traditional bricks and mortar means that engineering consultants need to take a more creative view when it comes to construction. Plans for building prefabricated pods that can be covered with turf, rammed earth houses, through to homes made from hay bales and even old tyres are all viable for homes of the future.

Natural homes as they are known are considered to be beneficial to the environment in many ways, as well as being beneficial for those living in them. Using materials that are sustainable, and construction methods that rely more on man power than machinery, natural homes have the potential to be a carbon efficient way of providing housing. Engineering consultants involved in sustainable housing projects focus on making sure that the ecological, carbon and environmental footprint is as small as possible, not only through the materials used, but by the means of providing energy and water to the homes.

Although it may seem that alternative natural housing is a new concept, some of the methods of construction are thousands of years old. Rammed earth housing for example is a favourite choice of the engineering consultant because of the abundance of earth and the longevity of the resulting structure. By making bricks out of a compacted sand gravel and clay mixture, buildings of any size can be constructed which require very little maintenance and can last for well over a thousand years.

For a material to be considered by engineering consultants in a sustainable building project, it has to be able to provide an aesthetically pleasing structure and a healthy indoor environment. Specialist building techniques that minimise heat loss and yet provide adequate ventilation are used by engineering consultants and architects to lessen negative environmental impact once the building is occupied. There is evidence of sustainable houses maintaining an indoor temperature of 25 degrees Celsius all year round without the need for heating or air conditioning.

As the technologies behind constructing sustainable buildings become more sophisticated and easier to implement, engineering consultants will find that their work will diversify even further, possibly moving away from traditional engineering materials and methods entirely. An industry that was once associated with metal, concrete and heavy plant machinery will instead turn towards the skills that were being used thousands of years ago.
