Engaging Employees From India

By:

Because of the increased ease of travel and the need for better-trained experts in operating enterprises, many companies turn to skilled employees from India to populate their workforce. Often, the shortage of capable employees locally would turn many enterprises to seek out Indian expertise for their staffing needs.

The challenge here is how to engage the expat employee to be productive while living in a foreign land. While simple matters such as language and cultural differences can be overcome, there are still many concerns that enterprises face when employing Indians as part of their work force. The following are some tips for employers need to know when deciding on engaging foreign employees as part of their staff complement.

a) Proper Selection. It all starts here. Aside from the standard due diligence of the individual's expertise and credentials, the personality of the individual Indian must be thoroughly reviewed. The individual must be open to new experiences and has a genuine interest in other cultures. If the individual has a family, then interviewing the family is also helpful since this would be a family decision. Once all these are obtained, selecting the right individual with all the qualifications and the personality for the job should not be a hard decision to make.

b) Preparing the Employee. In preparing the employee for eventual assignment, there must be a program undertaken to provide the necessary tools for the individual and if ever their family. These include proper advisories on the country, the cuisine and conditions must be given. A language course also needs to be done so that the individual Indian would be able to communicate with the locals. For long term assignments, Indian employees are given time to "test the waters" so to speak by spending an initial short period in the new country of residence.

b) Local Preparations. With local preparations, the Indian expat must be provided with all the necessities to be able to live comfortably away from their home country. This includes accommodations, transportation and a means of communication with the home country. Also important is to have a banking process to allow the individual to send or receive money to and from the home country. Other preparations include acclimatization and a short tour of the immediate vicinity of employment and residence for the individual expat.

c) Fellow Expats. Finding groups and associations of Indians would be helpful in making your expat's stay in the country much more comfortable. Allowing them to socialize and spend time with their countrymen in your locale would not only help boost morale but also keep them sociable in the long run.

As can be seen, engaging the services of an Indian expat as an employee is not just about the employment. It is also about them being comfortable outside of work can help make them productive employees. Thus, you need to find the right employee with the right mindset, prepare that chosen employee for the job at hand, prepare the local accommodations and other needed matters for their comfortable life and also having them meet other fellow expats can not only help the expat be comfortable away from home, but make your enterprise better and productive in the long run.
