Engagement Ring - A Tradition Or Showoff?

Taking in view the historical records about cultures, traditions and geographical aspects, it is noticeable that there was no concept of engagement celebration before thirteenth century. This thing shows the simplicity of that era when people were used to conduct the marriage ceremonies in a simple manner. But after fourteenth century when the world moved towards modernization there occurred a twist in traditions and culture. It was the time when the Romans introduced a new purpose of gathering as an engagement event before marriage and after acceptance of proposal which then it became a trend. At that time people use to give sewing thimble as a gift on this special eve. The first engagement ring featured with diamond was given by Archduke Maximilian (Austria) to his bridle Mary (Burgundy) in 1477. In eastern society the custom of exchanging rings is old but in west it has become common recently in nineteenth century.

There exist lots of differences among people of east and west according to traditions, customs, norms and culture. Similarly the events of engagement and marriage are also celebrated in a different manner. But one of the common things is the engagement ring in the event of both the societies. Most of the time Western groom and bridle go for purchase of engagement ring together and it is only purchased for the bridle. In east there is a trend of exchanging engagement ring and people prefer to get matching rings which may be purchased by groom or they may purchase it together.

Traditional ritual or Showoff

There is no one answer to this mystery because everyone has its own state of mind and thoughts. Yes the exchange of engagement ring or presentation to the bridle has become a tradition but some people may use it for showing their richness. Enjoying any ceremony is right of every individual and engagement event provides great deal of pleasure and emotions but if it has been used to showoff then it is witnessed that the relation grows on the fact of greed. In this type of situations it became difficult for the couple to stay together for a long time.

Engagement ring is treated as a gift in many regions and areas of the world but it has no defined specified rules except USA. In United States of America it is treated as a gift but contains an exception that unlike other gifts it may be revoked if the relation breaks. As in America only the bridle wears the engagement ring so she has to return it to the groom in such case and no question can be raised regarding who is responsible for this break.
