Energy Savings Help You Lower Your Bills

By:

Texans are used to high energy prices. Because of the year-round dry heat and the need to use personal cars as the primary means of transportation in most Texas cities, residents of the state are accustomed to forking over a high percentage of their income on basics like electricity, gas, and water bills. In an economy like this, most families cannot afford to be paying such outlandish energy prices, however, and so it makes sense to do all that you can to cut back and simply use less.

When many people imagine energy-efficient homes and cars, they think of Spartan dwellings that are powered by unsightly wind turbines, or unstylish compact cars that can only go up to 60 miles/hour. But dont worry; creating energy savings in your home does not mean drastically lowering the quality of your lifestyle. You certainly do not have to give up all of your treasured American luxuries in order to reduce your energy bills. There are simple steps that you can take to reduce your consumption without drastically altering your lifestyle. Follow these tips and you will be working smarter here, not harder.

1. Turn off the lights

If there is one thing in Texas and across the country that wastes so much energy that you might as well set your money on fire, it is leaving the lights on when you are not in the room. Whether you forget to turn off the kitchen light before you go upstairs to bed, or leave on your bathroom light after you go to work, every second that bulb is on you are wasting more and more money. So make it a habit to flick the switch whenever you leave the room. Before you leave the house for a long period of time, make a brief 30-second sweep to make sure everything is turned off. Remind your family members who seem to be slacking. The energy savings that you will create just by altering this one simple habit will truly astound you!

2. Shut down your computer!

When you are done working for the day, or you finish checking your emails after work, you might be tempted to just leave your computer on. Perhaps you have some files that you are working on, and you do not want to close out of them just yet. Unfortunately, this behavior saps up energy and wastes money. How much energy you will save by shutting down your computer at night of course depends on the efficiency of the machine, and how much you use it during the day. But some experts estimate that the average family could save between $60-100 on their bills annually.

3. Unplug appliances

This is one tip that many longtime homeowners are surprised to hear. Did you know that when you leave appliances plugged in, they actually absorb energy from the outlets even if they are not turned on? Thats right: your computer, your toaster, and your hair dryer are all using up precious resources during the day when they are shut down, unused, and turned off. So make a point of unplugging when you are not using something.
