Energy Efficient Ideas For Your Next Home Repair

By:

If you hang around the home improvement boards long enough, you will quickly come to realize that there tend to be two different lines of thinking when it comes to making home repairs: those that are concerned with creating a more energy efficient home and those that want to create a more aesthetically pleasing home. While each set of thoughts have their advantages and disadvantages, there is no reason why the determined homeowner cannot receive the best of both worlds: a beautified home that reduces energy consumption and cost. The following are a few tips to set you on your way to achieving just that.

1. Vinyl siding. In northern temperatures, vinyl siding can be one of the biggest stress reducers. Older wooden plank siding comes with a high degree of maintenance that most homeowners can't keep up with or afford--especially during the winter. Vinyl siding comes with very little maintenance and helps control the loss of energy seen with wood siding. In addition, vinyl siding is much less expensive that its wooden alternative and installs with ease.

2. Window Replacement. Hands down, a home's windows are one of the biggest sources of energy loss. Many of these windows have also gone out of style and do not reflect the aesthetic potential that your home inherently has. When the time presents itself, change out the older windows and replace with modern energy efficient models. Not only will your home receive an instant facelift, but the load on the HVAC equipment will be reduced considerably--thereby taking a big chunk out of your home's energy consumption. It's not that windows use any energy--it's that older windows are thinner and improperly sealed, allowing the heat to escape from the home in the winter and enter during the summer.

3. AC Wall Units. Everyone welcomes a wall unit air conditioner on a blistering summer day--it tends to be the gathering point after being outside. However, if you were able to see the money that flies out the window to operate them even for a few moments, you would probably change your mind. Try replacing your old inefficient wall unit with a modern split A/C unit. Not only are they incredibly more efficient , but homeowners are able to create a semi-custom look by matching the home's interior and exterior decor with the design of the unit itself.

4. Kitchen Appliances. The design choices are endless when upgrading older model appliances. New appliances are sleek and modern and create an instant fresh look in the kitchen--particularly the ever popular stainless steel designs. When you are in the market to upgrade your old dishwasher, microwave, and fridge, you can also permanently reduce the load on your home's energy consumption every month. Newer appliances have numerous advantages over their old counterparts. When you consider you're your home's energy bills will decrease, the kitchen will receive an instant makeover, and everything will function effectively and efficiently, replacing old appliances seems like a no-brainer.

5. The washer and dryer. Washers and dryers are high on the list of energy consumptive appliances in the home. New washers use less water and energy than older models; dryers are more efficient and insulated. In addition, newer models deliver a fresh, clean look to the laundry room. Energy analysts also recommend that homeowners do their laundry during the evening--when energy demand is at its lowest and the power grid is less strained.
