Energy Efficient Appliances Can Save Money

By:

Saving money is something that every homeowner should be concerned about. There are many ways to reduce energy bills and add to the savings. One area that many people often forget about or do not think will provide savings would be the kitchen appliances. There are many things that can be done to save on the purchase and operation of these important devices.

Buying Savvy

When it is time to replace a new appliance, it is very important to shop around and get the best deal. Many times, stores will feature significant savings during various holiday sales. Comparing prices between retailers is wise. Some stores may even match the price of a competitor if a copy of their ad is presented.

Graded appliances can often be purchased at a considerable discount. These are simply items that have minor cosmetic damages. The unit will still properly function and many times the scratch or dent is small or barely visible.

Shopping online is something that can still be done for such large appliances. Doing this in advance of the purchase will ensure that the best deal is found. For major purchases, many online retailers will provide free shipping and delivery.

Energy Efficient

The cost is not the only thing that should be looked at. Energy-efficient models will help to save a family significant money in the long run. Many times, a unit will be advertised with the cost that it will incur each month or each year to operate. This is often not considered when making such purchases.

After the Purchase

Once the new or graded appliances are in place, there are a number of different things that can be done in the kitchen to save additional money. The first thing would be to keep the area around the refrigerator clean and free from dust. Older models would feature numerous coils on the back of the refrigerator that needed to be frequently cleaned. These are no longer found on new devices, but it is still essential to vacuum and clean underneath and at the back of this appliance. This will ensure that it has adequate airflow and functions most efficiently.

When it comes time to run the dishwasher, this should only be done when there is a completely full load. This will save the most energy and fewer loads of dishes will need to be run. Also, if the machine has a heated drying option, this can be turned off. It takes a significant amount of energy to heat up and dry dishes in this manner.

On those hot summer days, avoid cooking things in the oven until later in the day or use an outside grill. An oven can increase the inside temperature by at least 10%.

With the right kitchen appliances and a few simple steps, a family is able to save money in the kitchen.
