Energy Drinks - Parents Need To Understand The Pitfalls These Drinks Have For Their Children.

Have you ever noticed the expanding choices given for energy drinks and energy boosting drinks that currently on the marker? With American's losing more sleep many turn to these types of drinks to provide them with a boost to start their day or give them a mid afternoon restart. Adults decide for themselves if these drinks are healthy but there are no regulations as to what age they can be distributed to. Is it OK for a ten year old to walk into a convenience store and buy an energy drink as long as it doesn't contain any alcohol?

While these drinks do give energy to the body after drinking them, they also contain extremely high doses of caffeine and sugar. Both these ingredients can wreck havoc on a young child's system. If they imbibe these drinks regularly then their body will become dependent on the caffeine. It may cause problems in their sleep habits. Often times, after drinking these types of drinks there is an immediate sugar rush but then it leaves you in a slump because your body is now coming off the sugar high.

As parents, we need to monitor the types of beverages and amounts our children are consuming. The downside is you cannot be with your children 24/7 and they can go into any grocery store, athletic field or gas station and buy a can without any problems. We need to educate the majority of our population to realize these drinks are not the best when it comes to our youth.

There are those that feel that having a restriction of being 18 or older to purchased these drinks is little excessive. However, some of these drinks are so potent that it causes the body to operate at a higher level than normal and have been the cause of a healthy adult to have a heart attack or stroke. This has occurred and may happen again but do we wish to put our children at any risk? Perhaps, tighter warnings should be on labels of the extreme energy drinks

Parents need to be educated on the risk some of these energy drinks pose for their children. At the very least they should be restricting the amount they are consuming. Even for adults, after repeated consumption of these drinks the body adapts and it doesn't give the same boost as it once did therefore pushing people to consume more. It then becomes a vicious cycle.
